Easter Kintsugi Workshop | April 17, 2021

Saturday, April 17 | 9:00AM-12:00PM EST | Learn the Japanese redemptive art of Kintsugi with Vesper Stamper in this hands-on workshop with virtual and in-person options.

Overview
Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of mending broken ceramics with precious metals, restoring the vessel's usefulness and elevating its beauty and value--a wonderful Easter image! Register below to take part in a reflective, hands-on workshop to learn this redemptive art in Eastertide with facilitator Vesper Stamper.
This workshop will be presented virtually with a limited in-person option. This means we'll have space for a few people (exact numbers TBD) to participate live from the church building while also streaming the event online to others. (Yes, we'll do our best to get the cameras close to the action!) You'll be asked below to indicate your preference for in-person or virtual options, and we will accommodate preferences on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Cost
Registration costs $65 and includes one Kintsugi kit. We'll ship kits to virtual participants, but you'll also need to obtain a few additional materials separately (see list below). In-person participants will be provided all materials besides the ceramic vessel to be mended. We have about 25 Kintsugi kits available for our registrants, but additional kits may be purchased directly from https://culture-care-creative.myshopify.com/collections/all for $75 each.

Scholarships
We don't want anyone to miss out on this because of financial difficulties, so please reach out to Seth Little to ask for a scholarship. Additionally, registrants will have the option below to make an additional donation to help cover scholarships.

Additional Supplies
In addition to the supplies in the kit, you will need the following materials for the Kintsugi workshop. Please read the list carefully in case you need time to collect anything beforehand:

     - A broken ceramic cup, bowl or plate to mend.  A chipped piece is preferable to a broken one for your initial workshop.  An object that a particular memory or story is attached to is great!
     - A butter knife
     - A bowl of water
     - Masking tape
     - Alcohol wipes or Purell to clean the brush in the kit and your fingers
     - Paper towels
     - Newspaper or plastic to spread out under your workspace
     - A small amount of turpentine or turpentine substitute. A few easily obtainable substitutes include: nail polish remover, charcoal lighter fluid, cigarette lighter fluid, and mineral spirits, mosts of which should be available at your local drug store.
     - Latex/nitrile gloves (if you don't want stickiness on your hands; however, bare hands are just fine!)

Summary
This opportunity has come to us by way of our friend Mako Fujimura, an internationally celebrated painter and Christian arts leader. Mako has organized similar Kintsugi workshops across the country in the last year or so, and Vesper trained as a facilitor at one of these last fall. Mako's new book, Art & Faith, discusses the the connections between Kintsugi and Easter, or more specifically, between Kintsugi, the Resurrection, and the promised New Creation that Christians look for and work to welcome. You're invited to order a copy of Art & Faith and join us in reading it together beginning the first week of Easter beginning Monday, April 5. We will send out a discussion call schedule to all registrants and publish in church announcements when ready.
We're so excited for this workshop and look forward learning and reflecting on this beautiful, hopeful art together with Vesper and with you!

Warmly,
Seth Little & Seth Trouwborst
All Angels' Arts Ministry
